3. Quiz

Hey there, 👋🏼

I hope you have been well…although the recent temperatures have been pushing all of us toward the melting point.

My brain surely is showing signs of melting and turning into mush. But I am super happy that I have been posting consistently on all platforms that matter to me and getting more camera-okay (I wouldn't dare say friendly, yet).

I am finally out of the to-reel or not to reel phase and have started reeling on Instagram.

If my cat can be chill about it, why can’t I? Right?!

This brings me to the main topic of this week’s newsletter.

But before that the quiz question

Which form of advertising was launched for the very first time in the 19th century which would go on to become one of the most creative assets for advertising in the future?

Answer under the signature

What kind of content do people really want to see online these days?

What do they vibe with?

I have been experimenting with all sorts of content.

Mostly educational though cause that’s just me…I love sharing insights.

I did dabble in some memes, too, but truthfully I have a hard time being funny.

Anyways, despite trying every kind of content that would help my audience, I could not do the one thing that guarantees rapid growth in followership:

Shitposting.

It seems like people’s version of guilty pleasure to indulge in shitposts.

It’s like watching Bigg Boss and never admitting to watching it.

Coming back to shitposting, while they do get you a ton of engagement and followership, it comes back to what’s happening to the “quality” of your followers.

If you think that having a ton of followers is going to get you hired, let me tell you one thing, you might get hired, but if you are going to try shitposting your employer to glory, to gain engagement, then you might get fired, too.

A shortcut is never the answer. Ask yourself why you want the engagement.

Why do you want the followership?

I actively remove followers on Twitter and Instagram when I see that they are not who I want in my audience or I know they are not there for learning purposes.

Your metrics should lead to numbers in the form of revenue. If that ain’t happening then there’s no point having a ton of numbers next to your name.

Also, there is a side effect to having the wrong audience following you. The algorithm takes that as an insight to push your content to more such people.

I still get asked if it’s okay to buy followers.

And I guess it’s a “50 First Dates” kind of shock for me every time.

NO, it’s not okay to buy followers. Or post stuff that means nothing to you, your personal brand, your business, or your purpose, just for the sake of vanity metrics.

What do you do instead?

Let me break this news to you.

You can actually build a profitable business even with a smaller audience.

I will share more on that on my reels on Instagram and posts on LinkedIn.

To answer the question: what people are really looking for online?

  1. Entertainment that makes them laugh and breaks the monotony of their lives.

  2. Education for which they don’t have much time given their tough daily routines.

Do both or do either. Whatever you do, think of your end audience when you’re posting.

Remember, you are posting for them, not yourself.

Every tweet, every post, every comment is for someone else.

If it was for you, it should’ve been in a journal.

So be empathetic and rock your social media.
