Hi there, 👋🏼

How have you been?

After much contemplation, I have decided to make DigiWitch Potions a weekly issue instead of a bi-weekly one.

Sure, it takes me a good amount of time to write it each week, but given the appreciation I have been getting for it, I was sure to get greedy and come back with more good stuff for you.

So yeah, I will be here in your inbox every Wednesday morning (IST) and midnight (EST) from now on.

Jumping into this week’s topic, which happens to be a personal favorite for me. Emotional Marketing.

The all-encompassing power of emotions cannot be overlooked. It appeals to our reptilian brain. The part of the brain, scientifically known as the amygdala, is responsible for the fight-or-flight responses in our body.

The funny part is, it is this reptilian part which feels fear and pleasure for us is the one that is responsible for 90% of decision-making humans.

So even if you think you are coming to a logical conclusion, it is actually your amygdala (in most cases) also referred to as the “gut feeling” that actually drives the decision.

It is this interesting take that made me take up neuro-marketing as a course that taught me things that delve way deeper than just making emotional ads.

Talking about emotional ads, or hooks that make you click to read more, all of these are actually catering to that reptilian brain. They are making you feel rather than think. As such, it’s appealing to a much larger audience which unites us beyond language.

That is how powerful emotional marketing is. It uses symbolism, simple gestures, and storytelling to make a mark in your heart and mind. Please note: when we say thinking from the heart, what we mean is “thinking from the amygdala."

Quiz: In Taiwan, Pepsi-Cola committed a significant mistake (no pun intended) with its slogan 'Come alive with the Pepsi generation.' The translation of the catchphrase in Taiwanese resulted in conveying what message?

Hint: Emotional Marketing Gone Wrong (Answer under signature)

Here are 3 reasons why emotions matter in marketing:

  1. Human Connection: Emotions are the universal language that binds us together. By tapping into consumers' emotions, you can create a profound connection that resonates deeply with their values, aspirations, and desires.

  2. Memorable Experiences: Emotionally-charged marketing campaigns have a lasting impact on individuals. When you touch someone's heart, they remember your brand, share your message, and become loyal advocates.

  3. Differentiation: In a crowded marketplace, emotions help your brand stand out from the competition. By focusing on how you make people feel rather than just what you offer, you can create a unique and authentic brand identity.

Here are some of the mind-blowing campaigns by some of the most loved brands on this planet that struck an emotional chord with grace.

Nike: Dream Crazy Campaign (2018)

By featuring Colin Kaepernick, Nike took a stand for social justice and equality. The campaign stirred emotions, sparked conversations, and positioned Nike as a brand that stands with its customers' values.

Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" Campaign (2013-14)

By personalizing their bottles with people's names, Coca-Cola triggered a sense of belonging and connection. Consumers felt compelled to share their experiences, leading to a viral social media phenomenon.

Google's "Dear Sophie" Ad (2012)

This heartwarming ad showcased a father using Google products to create a digital time capsule for his daughter. It resonated with viewers on an emotional level, emphasizing the role of technology in preserving memories and strengthening relationships. Just imagine the number of parents and even young adults having an emotional moment looking at this ad and relieving their days. Powerful.

Since this is a newsletter and not a how-to post, I will not be pouring into the details of how to create these amazing connections and ads. I will have a DigiWitch blog post for it and share the link to it in the next newsletter.
